Graphic design challenge ยท Lesson 1

YOU'RE HIRED!

Create your own cereal brand.

A cereal company needs a brand-new product. You're the designer.

Today: ideas + 2 rough sketches
Do now ยท 3 minutes

Which cereal would YOU pick?

CRUNCH
BLAST
๐ŸฏSUPER CRUNCHY!
MOON
BITES
๐ŸŒ™GALAXY BERRY
POWER
OATS
โšกFUEL YOUR DAY

What caught your attention first: name, color, image, or lettering?

These are fictional sample designs, not existing cereal brands.
Quick look ยท 5 minutes

What makes packaging work?

BRAND

The identity people recognize and remember.

LOGO

The distinctive name or symbol of the product.

MASCOT

A character that helps the product stand out.

TYPOGRAPHY

How letters look and communicate personality.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The people the product is designed to attract.

COMPOSITION

How images and words are arranged.

Creative brief

Your design mission

Invent a cereal that does not exist.

1. Name it

What will people call your cereal?

2. Flavor it

What does it taste like?

3. Sell it

Who is it for, and why would they want it?

It can be funny, strange, sporty, spooky, futuristic, or completely original.

Brainstorm ยท 5 minutes

Build your brand

Cereal name: __________________

Flavor: __________________

Target audience: __________________

Mascot or main image: __________________

Try these idea starters:

โ€ข What if your cereal came from another planet?

โ€ข What if a sneaker brand made cereal?

โ€ข What if your cereal had a superhero mascot?

Keep your ideas on the same paper you will use for your sketches.

Teacher demo ยท 2 minutes

One brand. Two layouts.

SKETCH A

Huge cereal name + small mascot

SKETCH B

Huge mascot + name across the bottom

Teacher: quickly draw two different arrangements on the board. No need to finish or color them.

Studio challenge ยท 18 minutes

Draw TWO different cereal box ideas

  • Show the cereal name in both designs
  • Include a mascot or strong main image
  • Make the layouts noticeably different
  • Try expressive lettering and clear composition

Sketch lightly. These are rough ideas, not final artwork.

Studio timer

Time to design

18:00

Create two layouts. Keep the sketches loose and readable.

Exit ticket ยท 5 minutes

Choose your strongest concept

Circle Sketch A or Sketch B.

Finish this sentence:

โ€œI chose this design because __________________________.โ€

Make sure your paper includes your name, cereal name, flavor, target audience, and two sketches.

Stop here ยท End of lesson 1

Next time: Make it stand out.

In Lesson 2, we'll refine the best sketch with stronger typography, a mascot or central illustration, and a color palette.

You do not need a physical cereal box yet.
