Album Cover Art Challenge
What if someone could see the feeling of a song before hearing it?
How can artists use images, colors, and typography to communicate the mood and message of music?
Album cover art is a visual identity for music. A strong design can tell us something about the sound, mood, artist, or story.
These are fictional examples showing how different visual styles communicate different moods.
Which design looks like energetic music? Which looks like quiet music? What visual clues helped you decide?
Warm, cool, bright, dark, saturated, or muted colors establish mood.
Letterforms communicate personality. Bold? Elegant? Hand-drawn?
Symbols, illustrations, portraits, and abstract shapes communicate meaning.
Placement, scale, contrast, and focal point guide the viewer's eye.
Could a sad song have a bright, colorful cover? Explain why an artist might choose that contrast.
Select one school-appropriate song. You will design an original cover inspired by that song, not copy its existing artwork.
Teacher approval is required before beginning the final artwork.
Use the song's mood to make design decisions.
Before creating your final cover, draw three different thumbnails on paper. Change your composition, imagery, or typography each time.

Three minutes per thumbnail. Focus on ideas, not perfection.
Challenge: Your design should make visual sense even before someone hears the song.
Find your song in Spotify, select Share, and copy its song link. Paste it below to create a QR code for your artwork.
QR generation uses an external QR service and requires an internet connection. Test the printed code before displaying it. Spotify access may be required for playback.
Display your artwork. Scan other students' codes and listen to how their designs connect to their chosen songs.
How did you use color, imagery, and composition to communicate the mood of your song?
Bonus: Which classmate's design surprised you, and why?
